Lexington, KY - A fax is hitting area businesses warning about a potential loss of a government contract due to some missing information…but the faxes are bogus.
A local business tells your Better Business Bureau they received one of these bogus faxes.
The letter head makes the letter appear to be from the U.S. Department of Transportation Procurement Office. It states that their records show that your business is currently registered as a prospective contractor for procurements issued by the Department of Transportation.
However, the letter says, you have not submitted your financial information release form. It urges you to complete the form and fax it to a number they provide. It looks legitimate.
The D.O.T. has a warning on their website about this scam. They say DOT does not require any financial information to be submitted in order to be eligible for procurement. They say it's just an attempt by con artists to steal your bank information. The address used on the letter is also not correct.
With companies needing as much business as they can get these days, it would be easy to fall for this, especially since it pretends to be from a government agency. Warn your employees…..if you get this letter on your business fax machine, don't fall for it!
