Lexington, KY - Another twist on an e-mail phishing scam has been hitting area e-mail boxes…and if you are a regular customer of some delivery services, you could fall victim to it.
Many people have used a service to deliver documents, packages or even cash. UPS, DHL and Western Union are used every day by individuals and businesses alike. For added convenience you can often track delivery status right from your computer.
That's what the con artists hope will throw you when you get their phishing scams in your email box. Several of these received at your Better Business Bureau:
One says it's from DHL..it states that a package you sent on a certain date did not get delivered due to a bad address. It tells you to open the attached invoice with more information.
Another claims to be from UPS…also saying that a package was unable to be delivered due to an incorrect address. It also asks you to open an attachment to review the invoice.
Even Western Union's name is used. One we've seen tells you that your online account with them has been suspended due to failed log-in attempts. Again, you are told to open an attached form to restore your account.
If you use any of these services even once in a while, you could be fooled if you receive one of these emails. The websites for the businesses warn about these scams.
They warn that opening the attachments in these phishing e-mails could plant a virus on your computer or steal your identity…so don't fall for it.
