Job Scam Uses "Best Buy" Name

6/16/2010

Lexington, KY - Reports say there are 6 job seekers for every job opening out there right now…with a tight market, a job offer arriving in your email may seem like a godsend…and one that is hitting across the U.S. is using the name of a popular electronics and appliance store.

Many employment scams your Better Business Bureau has warned you about involved businesses that stated they are overseas and need someone to handle various aspects of the business for them here in the U.S. One of those scams specifically involves shipping items overseas, known as the "reshipping" scam.

The latest one uses the name of the popular retailer Best Buy. Job-seeking consumers across the nation are receiving e-mails purportedly from a Best Buy recruiter, with application attached.

In the email, the job seeker is told they are being considered as a "gift wrapper" for Best Buy. The job entails receiving merchandise purchased by customers, then wrapping it and re-shipping it elsewhere. You can make $2000 a month just working 25 hours a week. Sounds pretty sweet…

This whole thing is bogus. The Better Business Bureau in Minnesota, where Best Buy is headquartered, has been notified by the company that this is a scam. The job offer is not from Best Buy.

Best Buy says that applications for jobs with them are only accepted through their online process or physically in a store…never through an emailed application or resume.

If you take advantage of a so-called "job offer" re-shipping items, which are likely stolen, you could be doing something for which you could be prosecuted, even if you don't realize you're doing something illegal. If you get this job offer, don't fall for it.
